What Causes Breast Cancer?

While the exact cause of breast cancer is not known, several risk factors may increase the likelihood of developing the disease. These include genetic factors, age, dense breast tissue, lifestyle choices, and environmental exposures. Despite these risk factors, breast cancer can occur in anyone, which is why regular screenings are essential.

How Breast Cancer Affects You

The impact of breast cancer goes beyond the physical. It can affect individuals emotionally, psychologically, and financially. EARLY detection through regular mammogram screenings plays a crucial role in:

  • Improving Prognosis: Early-stage breast cancer has a higher survival rate compared to cancer detected at a later stage.
  • Minimizing Treatment Side Effects: Early detection often results in less aggressive treatments, which can reduce the physical and emotional toll on the body.
  • Reducing Anxiety: Knowing your breast health status can alleviate the fear and anxiety surrounding the possibility of having breast cancer.
  • Financial Savings: Early detection and treatment can significantly reduce the financial burden associated with advanced cancer treatments.

Who Should Get Screened?

According to the Singapore Health Promotion Board,  women who are 50 years old and above are recommended to go for a mammogram once every two years. Mammogram screening is also recommended for women aged 40 and above, especially those with a family history of breast cancer. However, if you have concerns about your breast health or have a higher risk of breast cancer, screening may be recommended at an earlier age. Our specialists can provide guidance on when to start and how often to undergo mammogram screening. You may refer to the table below for more information:
