What is HPV and why does it matter?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of viruses spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact. It is one of the most common infections among both women and men. Most cases resolve on their own, but some high-risk types can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts, and other health issues affecting the reproductive system.
Because HPV often has no symptoms, many women may not know they have it. That’s why regular cervical screening and preventive vaccination play a key role in maintaining long-term health.

💉 Protecting Women’s Health Through HPV Vaccination
The HPV vaccine helps your body build protection against the virus types most commonly linked to cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases. It is most effective when given before exposure, ideally between the ages of 9 and 26.
Vaccination complements—but does not replace—routine screenings like Pap smears. Together, they provide a proactive approach to cervical cancer prevention and reproductive well-being.

👩⚕️ Who Should Consider the HPV Vaccine?
The Singapore National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) and National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) recommend that all females should receive the vaccine between the ages of 9 – 26.
- Ages 9 to 14: Two doses administered 5 to 13 months apart.
- Ages 15 and above: Three doses with the second dose 1-2.5 months after the first and the third dose 5-12 months after the first (HealthHub)

👩⚕️ Importance of Regular Screening
Even with vaccination, regular cervical cancer screening is crucial. The HPV vaccine does not protect against all HPV types that can cause cervical cancer. Women aged 25 to 29 are advised to have a Pap test every three years, while those aged 30 to 69 should have an HPV test every five years (HealthHub) (Singapore Cancer Society).
