MOM medical examinationThe six-monthly medical examination (6ME) is required by the Ministry of Manpower for migrant domestic workers throughout their employment. Not every test is done at every 6ME — MOM's letter states which. Our clinics complete exactly what is required, with on-site chest X-ray where needed, and submit the certified results to MOM.
The 6ME is a health screening the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) requires for migrant domestic workers (MDWs) during their employment. It screens for pregnancy and infectious diseases, and also checks body mass index and for visible signs of abuse.
MOM sends you a notification letter and 6ME form by post when your helper's examination is due. She must complete it by the date stated. The 6ME must be conducted at a clinic, and the results certified by a Singapore-registered doctor.
This is more than a compliance exercise. It is often the only regular medical review your helper receives — a chance to pick up problems early, and for her to speak to a doctor.
A widespread misunderstanding: not every test is done at every six-monthly examination. MOM sets different intervals for each.
| Test | How often | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Pregnancy | Every 6 months | Pregnancy status, which may affect her employment terms |
| VDRL (syphilis) | Every 6 months | Screening for syphilis infection |
| HIV | Every 2 years | Screening for HIV infection |
| Tuberculosis (TB) | Once, upon 2 years of stay in Singapore | Chest X-ray screening for TB |
| BMI & signs of abuse | At the examination | Monitoring weight loss and checking for visible injuries |

MOM requires migrant domestic workers to have measles immunity if the household has a child under 7 who is not fully vaccinated against measles. At Work Permit issuance (for new MDWs) or renewal (for existing MDWs), employers must make a declaration.
Employers bear all costs of testing or vaccination. MOM conducts sample checks and may request documentary proof. Where the requirement applies and the helper is not immune, work pass privileges may be suspended until valid proof is provided.

Not sure whether this applies to you? If your household has a child under 7 who is not fully vaccinated against measles, it does. Read more about the MMR vaccine.
MOM requires that employers and their representatives are not present during the examination. The 6ME also records body mass index and checks for visible signs of abuse — so that your helper can speak freely with the doctor about her health and wellbeing.
You are welcome to accompany your helper to the clinic. You simply won't be in the consultation room — and that is by design.
The 6ME is the employer's responsibility from start to finish.
MOM requires that you cancel her Work Permit and send her home immediately. Our doctors will explain the finding clearly and compassionately, and advise you both on what happens next. This is not a decision taken lightly, and you will not face it alone.
Two different examinations, at two different stages. They are not interchangeable.
| 6ME | Work Permit medical | |
|---|---|---|
| When | During employment, at MOM's stated intervals | Once, before the Work Permit is issued or renewed |
| Purpose | Routine screening, plus BMI and signs of abuse | Confirming she is fit for employment before the pass is issued |
| Tests | Pregnancy & VDRL 6-monthly; HIV 2-yearly; TB once after 2 years | More extensive — chest X-ray, HIV, syphilis, malaria, urine and physical |
| Age 50 and above | Exempt | Still required at renewal |

Straightforward, respectful and fully compliant.
Reserve a slot, especially if a chest X-ray is needed. Bring MOM's 6ME letter and form.
A physical examination and the tests MOM has specified, conducted privately.
Blood tests, and on-site chest X-ray if TB screening is due, in one visit.
Our doctors certify the results, and the clinic submits them via MOM's ME Portal.
No fasting is required. Chest X-ray can be completed on-site at our Suntec, Macpherson and Toa Payoh clinics.
The 6ME is paid for by the employer, along with any medical expenses arising from it. It is not covered by national subsidy schemes. Because the tests required vary between cycles — and because the measles requirement may add an MMR vaccination or antibody test — send us your helper's 6ME letter and we'll confirm the price for exactly what she needs.
Book her six-monthly medical examination at any of our clinics. We'll complete exactly what MOM has asked for, and submit the results for you.
