ICA medical examination

PR Medical Examination in Singapore

The Singapore Permanent Residence medical check-up is simpler than most people expect. ICA's Medical Examination Report form asks a doctor to certify exactly two things: a chest X-ray for tuberculosis, and an HIV test. Our clinics complete both on-site, and stamp the form.

What the PR medical check-up actually tests

Two certifications. That's the whole examination.

Chest X-ray — tuberculosis

The doctor certifies that you have undergone a chest X-ray, and indicates whether any evidence of active TB was detected.

Yes — evidence of active TB No — no evidence detected Exempted due to pregnancy

HIV test

The doctor certifies that you have been tested for HIV, and records the result. Testing done in Singapore may use either a rapid or an ELISA test.

Positive Negative / non-reactive

The current form has no separate physical examination section — despite what many clinic websites imply. The doctor also records their name, MCR number, signature, clinic stamp, address and telephone number. Source: ICA — PR Medical Examination Report form (version 6, December 2023).

You may not need the examination at all

ICA's form carries a declaration that almost no clinic mentions. If you have already submitted a medical report containing the same information to ICA or MOM — not more than two years ago — when you were granted another pass, you may declare that on the form instead of repeating the examination.

You'll need the pass type, the date it was granted, and its expiry date. If you had a medical for an Employment Pass, S Pass or Student's Pass within the last two years, check whether this applies to you before booking. Confirm with ICA.

Read the small print

The rules printed on ICA's form

They matter more than anything a clinic website tells you, and reports that ignore them are rejected.

  • The examination may be done by any registered doctor at a medical clinic licensed to carry out such tests.
  • Renewal applicants must have the examination done in Singapore. Other applicants may have it done in their home country or place of residence.
  • The report will only be accepted if submitted within 3 months of its issuance — so don't have it done too far ahead.
  • HIV testing done in Singapore may be carried out with either rapid or ELISA tests.
  • All fields must be duly completed. No additional remarks are allowed, and reports which do not meet ICA's requirements will be rejected.
  • Applicants previously exempted from the X-ray due to pregnancy must submit one certified by a Singapore-registered GP once no longer pregnant.

The form also carries a warning in capitals: it is an offence under the Immigration Act to make any false statement, representation or declaration.

Where it fits

When to do your PR medical examination

The medical examination belongs to the completion of formalities stage — after ICA grants in-principle approval of your Permanent Residence application, and before your PR status takes effect.

Because the report is only accepted within 3 months of its issuance, and because the formalities carry their own deadline, the sensible order is: read your approval letter, check whether the two-year declaration applies to you, then book.

ICA states that successful applicants receive an In-Principle Approval, and are granted permanent residence status once they have fulfilled the necessary conditions.

  • Your FIN card or NRIC, where applicable

PR medical examination FAQs

What is the PR medical examination?
It is the medical examination the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) requires as part of the Singapore Permanent Residence application, completed during the formalities stage after in-principle approval. A doctor completes ICA's Medical Examination Report form, which you then submit.
What tests are in the PR medical check-up?
Just two. ICA's Medical Examination Report form asks the examining doctor to certify a chest X-ray — indicating whether there is any evidence of active tuberculosis — and an HIV test result, recorded as positive or negative / non-reactive. There is no separate physical examination section on the current form.
Do I need to repeat the medical if I had one recently for another pass?
Possibly not. ICA's form contains a declaration for applicants who have already submitted a medical report containing the same information to ICA or MOM not more than two years ago, when granted another pass. If that applies to you, you may be able to declare it instead of repeating the examination. Confirm with ICA before skipping it.
How long is the PR medical report valid?
ICA's form states that the report will only be accepted if submitted within 3 months of its issuance. Don't have the examination done too far in advance of submitting your documents.
Can the PR medical examination be done overseas?
ICA's form states that renewal applicants must have the examination done in Singapore. Other applicants may have it done in their home country or place of residence.
Who can perform the PR medical examination?
ICA's form states it may be done by any registered doctor at a medical clinic licensed to carry out such tests. The doctor records their name, MCR number, signature, clinic stamp, address and telephone number on the form.
What if I'm pregnant?
The chest X-ray section of ICA's form can be marked 'exempted due to pregnancy'. Note that applicants previously exempted on that basis are required to submit an X-ray report certified by a Singapore-registered GP once they are no longer pregnant.
What kind of HIV test is used?
ICA's form states that HIV testing done in Singapore may be carried out with either rapid or ELISA tests.
Can the doctor add notes to the form?
No. ICA's form states plainly that all fields must be duly completed, no additional remarks are allowed, and reports which do not meet ICA's requirements will be rejected.
Do I need to fast for the PR medical check-up?
No. Fasting is not required for a chest X-ray or an HIV blood test.
What should I bring to the appointment?
Your passport, your FIN card or NRIC where applicable, and ICA's Medical Examination Report form. The form asks for your name exactly as it appears in your passport, so bring the passport itself rather than a photocopy.
What happens if the chest X-ray shows something?
Your doctor will explain the finding clearly and advise on next steps, which may include further tests or treatment. ICA assesses each application individually.
Is it an offence to give false information?
Yes. ICA's Medical Examination Report form carries an explicit warning that it is an offence under the Immigration Act to make any false statement, representation or declaration.
Is the PR medical examination subsidised?
No. It is not covered by CHAS, Healthier SG or other national subsidy schemes.
Do I need a medical for the Re-Entry Permit?
The medical examination is part of the PR application formalities. Re-Entry Permit renewal is a separate ICA process. Check your ICA correspondence for what is required in your case.
