Routine vaccineThe Tdap vaccine is a 3-in-1 booster protecting against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough). It's recommended in every pregnancy, for anyone in close contact with a newborn, and as a booster roughly every 10 years. Our doctors give the Tdap vaccine at all our clinics.
Tdap is a combination vaccine. The letters stand for Tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis — three serious bacterial infections it protects against in a single injection.
It works by prompting your immune system to produce antibodies and antitoxins. These neutralise the toxins the bacteria release — the toxins, rather than the bacteria themselves, cause most of the damage in tetanus and diphtheria.
Immunity from childhood vaccination fades over the years, which is why Tdap is given as a booster to adolescents and adults. It's a preventive measure, not a treatment.
Three similar-sounding vaccines. Here's what each one covers, and who it's for.
| Tdap | DTaP | Td | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protects against | Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis | Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis | Tetanus, diphtheria only |
| Who it's for | Older children, teens and adults — as a booster | Infants and young children — the primary series | Adults, as a routine 10-yearly booster |
| Strength | Lower diphtheria and pertussis doses | Full-strength childhood formulation | No pertussis component |
| Typical use | One adult dose; each pregnancy; around newborns | Doses from 2 to 18 months of age | Boosters after your Tdap dose |
